Dental crowns are one of the most common methods of repairing broken and damaged teeth. Modern restorations are made from high-quality materials that allow these crowns to blend in beautifully with the rest of the smile, meaning that you can completely erase all kinds of damage that have been done to your smile.
However, as with any dental treatment, some people are put off of the procedure by concerns about pain. Here’s what you should know about whether or not getting a dental crown is going to hurt.
Is it Painful to Get a Dental Crown?
Modern dental anesthetics are incredibly powerful, and will be applied liberally before any part of the dental crown process that could potentially involve any discomfort. For this reason, you can expect the process of getting your dental crown to be entirely painless.
It’s common for the patients’ tooth to be a little bit sore for a few days after receiving their dental crown, though this is usually short-lived and fairly mild.
What does Getting a Dental Crown Entail?
Typically, dental crowns are completed over the course of two appointments. The first involves removing the enamel from the tooth and taking impressions of your smile. We will take this time to design your dental crown, sending these designs to an external lab so that it can be milled.
While this is happening, you’ll have to wear a temporary dental crown in order to protect your tooth. This temporary restoration will be placed on the tooth with a weak adhesive, so you’ll have to be careful not to disturb or dislodge it. Your tooth may also be slightly sensitive during this period, so it’s usually also a good idea to avoid excessively hot or cold foods during this period.
After a week or two, your dentist will also bring you back to the office to put your dental crowns in place. At this point, you’ll be able to enjoy a perfectly whole smile.
